THE POWER OF THE OTHER PILLARS

Public and Internal

While it is possible to finance your mission exclusively from private sources—and some mission-driven organizations, in order to avoid restrictions placed on them if they did accept government grants, follow this strategy—there are two other potential sources of funding available to you, provided you are willing and able to develop them. The public pillar—availing yourself of government grants—requires a lot of work, initially, to establish yourself as a reliable partner in some area of interest to a government agency or other entity financed with taxpayer dollars. The internal pillar—generating an income stream from your beneficiaries or some other source either related or unrelated to your mission—will require all your ingenuity and creativity, but may be the shortest path to your own Financial Fourth of July (Independence Day). In any case, both of these pillars should be explored as an income diversification strategy because, as you will discover, all three pillars may grow and shrink over the life of your organization, depending on the vagaries of changing donor priorities, who holds the reins of power in government, and the fundamentals driving the robustness of your internal sources.
